Comment from Parlimentary Spokesperson Farooq Qureshi

9.00.00am GMT Fri 27th Mar 2009

At a meeting with Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat Leader, at the recent Spring conference, our Parliamentary Spokesperson, Farooq Qureshi agreed that fundamental change was needed to get the country out of recession.

Policies put forward by the Liberal Democrats would include:

Stopping tax loopholes used by the rich to cut the tax bill of people on middle and lower incomes;

Taking control of the banks we already own-full, but temporary nationalisation in order to give the banks a solid footing from which to start afresh;

Disqualifying those bankers who are responsible for the crisis-just as doctors and teachers are barred

for not reaching the standard expected of them;

Stimulating the economy by building new homes, hospitals, schools and a better public transport systems.

Farooq says "The Lib Dems are the only party that will put money back into people's pockets with fair tax cuts, and that will offer universal child care and smaller primary school classes. We offer a different approach for difficult times."
