You Can Make the Difference: Vote Liberal Democrat and Farooq Qureshi on 6th May

Wed 5th May 2010

This Thursday, 6th May is Polling Day. Polling stations will open 7am and close at 10pm, so there is plenty of time for you to vote. The location of your nearest polling station will be listed on the front of your polling card. If you can't find your card, your local council will be able to tell you where your nearest station is. You do not need your polling card to vote. If you have a postal vote but have not yet returned it, you can do so until 10pm on Thursday to any polling station in your constituency. If this is the first time you've voted, the Electoral Commission has a guide which walks you through the process which you can see at http://tinyurl.com/67a7s9 .(read full story)

Weedbusters is back! thanks to Liberal Democrat action.

Tue 4th May 2010

The Liberal Democrat proposal to introduce a garden clearance scheme for older people and residents with disabilities, has been passed by council. Lib Dem councillor for Leyton Bob Sullivan hailed the decision as "the return of the Weedbusters". He said: "The Weedbusters project was a popular and much valued scheme to held older and disabled people who could not cope with their garden. Sadly it was axed in a previous round of Labour cuts. I am delighted that the council's environmental performance has now improved enough that the Liberal Democrats can bring it back."

Farooq Qureshi, a profile of your local Liberal Democrat parlimentary candidate for Leyton and Wanstead

Wed 28th Apr 2010

I have lived in Waltham Forest since 1969. My children were born here and went to local schools. During this period I have actively participated in local social and political life and took a leading role in several campaigns. Throughout my life I have believed in, and fought for, a better, fairer and a caring society, where my children and those of our entire fellow citizen's, are given equal opportunities and, are equipped with decent education and the necessary skills to live a decent and responsible life.....

The Lib Democrat difference

Tue 27th Apr 2010

The Lib Dem difference. The Liberal Democrats will take action to protect frontline NHS services. We will put more police on patrol, restore the pensions' earnings link and deliver fair pay for the armed forces. We can make this pledge because we have identified real savings to pay for it. The Lib Dems are the only party with a plan to balance the country's books after the recession.

Local Labour - Its like the midges in May

Sun 25th Apr 2010

There's an election on and politicians you haven't seen since the last elections are appearing like midges in a heat wave! And they all need swatting. Our area has NEVER seen so many glossy leaflets and ex Labour councillors as in the last few weeks; they've suddenly developed an interest in our area after years of Labour neglect! They're full of false promises - and lies about the Liberal Democrats. But, like midges in May, when it's over ….. they'll disappear!

Lib Dem action on school places.

Wed 21st Apr 2010

Waltham Forest Lib Dems have pledged to take immediate steps to sort out the schools places crisis if the party takes control of the council following the elections in May. When Labour's Schools Minister Ed Balls visited Walthamstow on 25 March he blamed the council for the shortage of primary school places and refused to guarantee local schools the money they need to cope with extra pupils. Parliamentary candidate Farooq Qureshi said: "Labour would have swept this issue under the carpet until it was too take action. The shortage of school places is not an easy problem to solve because new schools are expensive and cannot be built overnight. But instead of Labour's hand-wringing we need clear leadership that is honest about the challenges."

Whipps Cross Hospital - Update still under threat of cuts

Sat 17th Apr 2010

Labour's London health bosses are planning cuts at Whipps Cross Hospital, including the loss of 174 beds, and reducing the amount spent on nurses and doctors across London. Farooq Qureshi and the local Liberal Democrat Focus Teams are campaigning to protect Whipps Cross from cuts. Farooq said: "Whipps Cross Hospital is vital to our local community, already too many services have been cut at Whipps Cross under Labour. Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to protect our local NHS services. We will cut waste and make sure that frontline services are maintained and improved for people everywhere."

Quotes of the Week

"How can you possibly take on such a large financial commitment as Trident without considering the military and political implications? If fierce cuts are to be made in Britain's conventional forces, surely we have to consider whether replacing Trident can be justified."

Sir Menzies Campbell

Response to announcement that the Ministry of Defence will be responsible for the cost of replacing Trident - 30 July

"With most of their leadership contenders claiming to back AV for a fairer voting system, it is astonishing they now wish to block the legislation to make that happen. Each and every Labour MP campaigned on a manifesto committing to a referendum. Now they have the opportunity to make this happen but have chosen to say no for opposition's sake."

Simon Hughes MP

Comment on Labour's decision to oppose legislation for a referendum on the alternative vote - 28 July

"With more than half of ASBOs breached in 2008, this was a policy more about posturing than effective policing. Local communities know that other measures, such as Acceptable Behaviour Contracts can nip problems in the bud before they escalate."

Co-Chair of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs and Justice, Tom Brake MP
