Comment from Liberal Democrat PPC Farooq Qureshi

Mon 1st Jun 2009

Leyton and Wanstead Liberal Democrat PPC Farooq Qureshi has hit out at local Labour MP Harry Cohen after he failed to turn up in Parliament to support a bill that would lower your fuel bills.Despite backing from Age Concern, Friends of the Earth and Help the Aged, the Labour Government used parliamentary tricks to stop the bill being agreed. Cllr Qureshi said: "Local Labour councillors have tried to hide their MP's failure to support local residents. But we want to know why Harry Cohen did not show up and support the needy residents of our constituency. Leyton and Wanstead ranks as one of the worst constituencies in London for high energy bills and poor home insulation. Wewant to help some of the most vulnerable residents of Leyton and Wanstead at a time when fuel costs are rocketing and many people are finding it tough. Why won't Harry Cohen do his bit?"

Lib Dems win Council Group of the Year Awards

Thu 14th May 2009

Waltham Forest Liberal Democrats are celebrating after receiving a Council Group of the Year Award from Party Leader, Nick Clegg MP. The prize recognised an excellent year for the local Liberal Democrats who won four of the five by-elections in Waltham Forest in 2008. Before the Lib Dems joined the Council administration in 2002, the previously Labour run council had been rated one of the worst in the country.

Redevelopment of the White House Estate

Thu 23rd Apr 2009

Residents of the White House Estate in Leyton Green Road were concerned that their estate was being planned for demolition by Forest Homes L&Q. To answer their concerns Lib Dem Focus Team member Cllr Farooq Qureshi arranged a meeting for tenants of the White House Estate and neighbouring streets with Forest Homes to discuss the future of the Estate. This well-attended meeting was also supported by the Forest South Residents Association and the Forest Safer Neighbourhood Team. Officers from Forest Homes gave a brief presentation, followed by a question and answer session. Forest Homes are planning to relocate White House Estate residents while building works take place. On completion, they will be given first choice of returning to the Estate if they wish.Focus will keep you informed of further developments.

Time for a change in Wanstead!

Fri 17th Apr 2009

It's time for a change and Kate Garrett will bring that change. Wanstead has been ignored by the Tory Council, in favour of Ilford, for too long. Wanstead residents already have two Tory councillors to represent them but where are they? When did you last see and hear from them? Have they spoken to residents, taken up local campaigns and reported back as Kate Garrett has done? The Labour Party admits that they have not been round since the last election in 2006. So who will speak up for Wanstead? This is your opportunity to make that change. Residents are already saying that if Kate is elected she will keep the two Tory councillors on their toes. Kate Garrett says: "My colleagues and I have listened to many Wanstead residents who say that they want someone who will speak up for them and voice their concerns about crime, the environment,Wanstead Park, the library, the Police station and many other local issues; all of which I have highlighted in my regular Focus newsletter and on the website. I will continue this fight to make sure that all residents' views are heard and that Wanstead is not ignored".

Wanstead High School - Let down by Tory Council

Tue 14th Apr 2009

Despite all the hype from the Tory council about investment in a new science block for Wanstead High School, Kate Garrett and the Liberal Democrats have discovered that no funds have been earmarked for this over the next year. The list of improvements for 2009/10 includes many Ilford projects but does not include this badly needed science block for Wanstead School. In fact, although the bulk of the money for this refurbishment has actually been budgeted for 2011/2012, no funding source has been identified. There is no certainty therefore that this refurbishment will ever be a reality unless the Tory council commits to a funding source. This will be a great disappointment to the students, parents and staff of Wanstead High School who lobbied the council for the much- needed science block during last year's "Redbridge Conversation". Once again, Wanstead has been ignored by its Tory councillors. It really is 'time for a change'.

Tory Redbridge Council in disarray!

Fri 10th Apr 2009

In previous website articles local campaigner Kate Garrett has highlighted the disarray in the Tory council group caused by the large rise in Council Tax. Now the Tories have dumped their leader after bitter infighting and replaced him with another councillor from Ilford. It seems that there are now two factions, neither of which have much interest in Wanstead

Traffic congestion - Leyton High Road

Thu 9th Apr 2009

You may have noticed recently that traffic on Leyton High Road tails back from the traffic lights at Grove Green Road to Drapers Road. At first this was due to road works, but now they are finished the hold ups remain the same. In the other direction traffic tails back from the Grove Green junction to Coronation Gardens and beyond. The traffic was never this bad, and may have something to do with the phasing of the traffic lights at this busy junction. The green light only appears long enough to let 3 or 4 cars through at a time. Cars idling in the queues greatly increase air pollution. What do you think about this problem. Please let your Lib Dem Focus teams know.

Can we afford our Labour MP Harry Cohen?

Wed 8th Apr 2009

It has been revealed that Labour MP for Leyton and Wanstead Harry Cohen, claimed £104,701 in the past five years for a second home - the highest claim for any London MP. He has a house in Wanstead and another in Colchester. Constituents struggling to meet their mortgage repayments,or trying to save for a 30% deposit to get onto the housing ladder. crease in their rents or finding the interest on their savings dwindling must be wondering "WHY?" Given that MPs can also claim for travel to work, why do those who live less than 60 miles from London need second homes at the taxpayers' expense.

Cut crime action needed in Wanstead

Mon 6th Apr 2009

It was reported this week that burglaries have fallen in London but have increased in Redbridge. The local Guardian reported that thieves have targeted wealthier parts of the borough like Wanstead looking for richer pickings. The High Street is reportedly going through an outbreak of crime with robberies and muggings. Kate Garrett is leading the campaign to cut crime. She says "We need the following four actions in order to cut crime in Wanstead"; a local 'Shop Watch' scheme where police shops and Government come together to make our High Street safer; more 'Neighbourhood Watches' in the area, where residents and police work together to cut crime and burglary; the Council to increase CCTV in the High Street and the police to increase their patrols locally. Working together is the only way we can cut crime. If you would like to join my campaign and help cut crime in our area then please telephone me on (020) 8989 2266.

Liberal Democrats in Waltham Forest - Keep pledge on Council Tax

Mon 6th Apr 2009

Liberal Democrat councillors in Waltham Forest again honoured their pledge to residents by keeping the Council Tax rise to below inflation when the Council's budget meeting agreed to an increase of one and half percent. This included additional investments of £5.7 million, some of which will go on more support for children in care and improving the cleanliness of the borough.

Park Barriers - restrict access to Roding Valley Park

Thu 26th Mar 2009

Residents using Roding Valley Park from Elmcroft Avenue are complaining about the barrier that has been erected at the entrance. It is so restrictive that families with pushchairs and wheelchair users have difficulty getting through it unaided. Yet despite protests the barrier is still there! Kate Garrett and the Wanstead Focus Team are investigating whether the rumours that another eight are to be built around the park are true.

Quotes of the Week

"On issue after issue, the Liberal Democrats have led the fight for real change while the Conservatives lagged behind. On the economy, on the environment and now on the real reform of politics, it is the Lib Dems that are offering something different."
